I came to the wonderful world of Usagi Yojimbo, roughly translated as Warrior Rabbit, late and I still have almost half of the run to read, but that hasn't dimmed my appreciation of Stan Sakai's wonderful work.

It's a wonderful tale of a masterless warrior (ronin) named Miyamoto Usagi. The work is a one man effort with engaging stories and wonderful story telling. It's simply incredible.

His version of the story of the 47 Ronin as published by Dark Horse and written by Mike Richardson is another terrific example of his storytelling.

I picked a B&W piece on eBay long ago. I like it, but I wanted to meet Stan and find a better example. The opportunity presented itself at the 2014 Boston Comic Con.

I was in MA on business and stayed over to visit the con on Saturday leaving that evening on the late flight. I got there early and made a beeline to the headliners: Sergio Aragones and Stan. I commissioned Sergio and bought this piece from Stan.

This was also at the time that The Sakai Project from Dark Horse was released. Stan's wife had been fighting brain cancer for a long time and his friends banded together to create a wonderful book of drawing dedicated to his Usagi character. Hundreds of drawings were submitted by well known and lesser known artists and the sample collected is wonderful though incomplete. All of the originals were auctioned and I tried to get a few, but failed. :(

After picking up my piece, I noticed that the person across from Stan had copies of for sale so I bought one and started collecting signatures in it from the artists present. I'm still adding them. As you can see in the Additional Images, I have a long way to go.
