Description
Davy Jones was a struggling strip with no memorable style when Wayne Boring took over as its artist. Having been the lead Superman artist for decades until at least the late 1960's, (shortly before this strip was drawn) Boring made the characters in Davy Jones ook almost exactly like his Superman and company. This is illustrated by comparing (at bottom right), images from this strip with those of a 1959 Boring Superman story, "The Girl in Superman's Past" Davy Jones himself looked even more like Superman than Marco did. We don't know whether this was a conscious effort by Boring to exploit the popularity of Superman or his just doing what came naturally. Boring's stint with Davy Jones was relatively short. Around this same time, he also lost out in the competition with Hal Foster's other assistants to take over Prince Valiant. Sadly, Wayne Boring, one of the most talented and beloved comic artists of all time, finished his days as a bank security guard.
