DescriptionI’m a Will Eisner fan, and when I had a chance to add a P’Gell page, I jumped at it. P’Gell was one, and probably the most famous, of The Spirit’s femmes fatales. According to Eisner, her jawline was inspired by Carole Lombard, and she had a little of Hedy Lamarr and Marlene Dietrich in her design (some of you may need to look up the reputations of the references). She was attractive, scheming, and ruthless. Of even more interest to the reader, she had a habit of getting married to wealthy or powerful men who were soon to die. Of course, they never seemed to know that their time on the Earth would be so short lived when they got married to her. Unlike comics of today, the Spirit stories were only 7 pages long, so clear and concise storytelling was critical. This page is a perfect example in that you know what’s going on, who the bad guy is, who the good guy is, and what the “McGuffin” is in the story - all in one beautifully rendered page. This is the last page from the story first published the week of November 10th 1946, and is P’Gell’s second appearance (and she only appeared in this one page). The inking is lush, and I’m thrilled to add this page to my collection (thanks Mark!).Social/Sharing |

A fantastic page. I keep telling myself, Why haven't you picked up an Eisner Spirit page yet? A master storyteller, no one does femme fatale better than Eisner. Congratulations Ron. Cheers! N.

Whenever you make a post, I look forward to not only looking at some exquisite artwork but also the little nugget of information you provide on it such as who Eisner based P'Gell on this one for instance. Going through the pieces in your gallery is like walking through an art museum with all your juicy snippets of information.
