Description

This is the original art for the twelfth and final illustration from the Arthur Rackham illustrated version of Gulliver's Travels, published in 1909. It is entitled the Struldbrugs, who in the book are characters that live forever and are not happy about it, so become foolish, opinionated, and unloving. Like many of Rackham's images, this has been republished repeatedly, and prints and giclee's can be found all over the internet.

While not the happiest image, this is immediately recognizable as a painting by the master, and has many of the hallmarks of a great Rackham piece. Check out the kitten in the girl's hands, or the hands of the crone at the the front of the image, or the incredible linework at the top of the picture, or the facial expressions on the characters, or the cobblestones. Wonderful.

To say that I am ecstatic over adding another Rackham painting to my collection is an understatement. As I have mentioned before, Rackahm is my favorite illustrator -- not only because of his incredible technique, but because I personally have great nostalgia for Rackham since I grew up reading his illustrated books. Its a good day.
