DescriptionOne of three pages I have from this fabulous issue showing, Gene Colan's artistry at it's best. It's just a terrific 2-up page featuring probably the most dramatic costume change ever for Matt Murdock and Battlin' Karen Page giving as good as she gets. I was so curious about what was covered by the stat and lettering in the first panel that I carefully lifted it all off. See the subsequent image to see what was there originally. The original idea was more dramatic (Matt almost shot in the face) but it was a good storytelling change to show his hands being freed. The last panel on this page in one of my favorites ever. One of these days I'm going to have that panel blown up to about 6' x 6' and framed on my wall. Interestingly, in an article about 'perfect moments' that capture Gene Colan's Daredevil artistry (http://www.theothermurdockpapers.com/2011/06/gene-colans-daredevil/), it wasn't this panel, but the three at the top which were among the images chosen. And great panels they are. No 'written by' credit on this issue - Lee and Colan are credited together as follows: "Brand Echhh will little note nor long remember what we say here...but the Mighty Minions of Marveldom will never forget this Breathtaking Battle of Babbling Behemoths by -- Stan (the Man) Lee and Gentleman Gene Colan". I guess Stan was right; I haven't forgotten. Letters by Artie Simek and colors credited to Stan Goldberg. I got this from Mitch in 1990 at one of the Los Angeles shows. Social/Sharing |

Gene Colan was the Hitchcock or Kubrick of comics. This page shows why he is now so greatly missed, but it's heartening that there is so much of his work out there to go back and enjoy.

Perfect panel is right! Great, great page. And twice-up goodness to boot.
