Description

A large-art Barry Windsor-Smith peak period page: is there anything above it?

This story is the only one he did for Warren and that's probably why it's rather obscure in the Windsor-Smith canon.

Still, it's the first indicator of marvels to come as it begins to percolate all the graphic, pre-Raphaelite influences that will push his art to unequalled grandeurs.

Period-wise, this story appears in January 1971, same month as Conan 4 (the justly-acclaimed "Tower of the Elephant" story).

But it's also the second-ever Winsdor-Smith story on which he gets to ink his own pencils (first time was a year before with his Conan try-out in Chamber of Darkness 4).

And this is his first-ever Black & White story, with fantastic intricate brush lines and great use of Zipatone.

All this, barely 3 months before the publication of Savage Tales 1 and the quantuum-leap of "The Frost Giant's Daughter"!

You now see where I'm going: this spells masterpiece all over!!!

And thanks also to Gardner Fox for a great myth-tinted story that gave Barry free rein to fully indulge in his own fantasies...

Thanks Mark! I agree this quite an off-beat story by Warren's standards, but it's a nice vehicle for BWS to start experimenting. Incidentally, I had spotted this page at SDCC a few years ago, but had been unable to acquire it at the time. This time around, I didn't let it elude me!

Thanks Mario! I also find it thrilling when it comes to showcasing some of the lesser-known work by the most-famous artists!
