Ten years. I suppose the first thing that comes to mind are all the clichés about where the time went and how the years just flew by. In terms of this site, of course it’s all about the great friends I’ve made, all the wonderful people I’ve met, and all the cool artwork I’ve been lucky enough to add to my collection over the past decade. “Decade”, now there’s a scary word. Don’t know why, but it makes me think of history books. I felt old ten years ago, so I’m feeling dang near ancient now! LOL! I can still remember that first night (more like early morning) sitting in front of my computer nervously contemplating my first post. Perhaps I thought that by doing so at that late hour, I could quietly “sneak” onto the site without anyone noticing. (Up to that point, I’d been a relatively private collector for the past 20 years.) But apparently I had forgotten that, while it was the middle of the night for me, somewhere in the world it was the middle of the day. So of course about 20 seconds after I hit SUBMIT, I got my very first comment. And the rest, as they say, is history!

Of course it hasn’t been ALL fun and games. When you put yourself out there, you inevitably open yourself up to attack. Thankfully the few instances have been more silly and stupid, rather than ugly or cruel. Then there was my Dad (thanks to Michael Kenyon for remembering his anniversary). Little did I know when I joined CAF on that night in late March, three years later (almost exactly to the day) I would lose my father to cancer. A lot can change in ten years.

Okay, as promised, here are some pieces I’ve never posted on CAF before. I’ve had these pieces for the better part of 25 years and in each case, I am either the original owner or only the second owner. At this point, I’m not really sure if they will stay up permanently or even how long they’ll be here. But for now, enjoy!

10th ANNIVERSARY - Day 6

Purchased in 1989 from the Graphic Collectibles catalog. THANKS MITCH! It’s like choosing between 6 children, but if I HAD to pick a favorite from my six covers, I might have to choose this one. With all due respect to Dave Cockrum, John Byrne, Barry Smith, Paul Smith, Jim Lee, and Joe Mad - the image on this cover is probably one of the very best drawings of Storm I have ever seen. On that basis alone, it would make this an easy choice for my personal favorite. But what makes this particular image even more special to me is the fact that it was totally and completely butchered by the Marvel art department. If you look at the image of the published cover that I’ve provided in the Additional Images, you’ll see the atrocity of which I speak. The repositioning of Storm’s leg and especially her head, are beyond awkward. If that wasn’t criminal enough, many of the creatures surrounding her were either repositioned or just removed completely! I’m just glad that this wasn’t done back in the 60’s or 70’s when the artwork probably would’ve come back with a slew of stats and paste-ups. Thanks to modern technology, the beauty and integrity of Arthur’s original vision remains untouched and intact on the artwork. I swear, I just cringe whenever I look at the published cover. I actually just try to avoid looking at it if at all possible. But I can stare at this original for hours! Adams and Russell at their best. Again, THANKS MITCH!!!!!

Okay, one more to go! See you all tomorrow for the Grand Finale!

By the way, I’ve resisted doing this so far, but while I have all your attention, I figure I may as well go for it. If anyone has any leads, tips, or rumors as to the whereabouts of the covers for Issue #8, #10, and #20, please let me know. For that matter, I’d be interested in any leads to any of the Classic X-men covers! Ha!

These pieces are stunning! Do you have a dedicated Adams' room for all this amazing art? I can't wait to see your final 10th Anniversary cover!

"If this needs to be lowered for the logo, do so freely (or shrink)." lol Somebody at Marvel really went to town on this one! I love the original version with the plethora of monsters... Art does such great monster/creatures, and you're right, this is one of the best images of Storm to ever grace a cover! So nice to have you share this one particularly, since it is such a stark contrast to the published version most of us are more familiar with.

I love the Adams / PCR art combo. Perfectly positioned. Another example where the unpublished version was superior to the published image. What were they thinking or smoking? Cheers! N.

Wow, I'd have to agree with you--as much as I like seeing the full group, this might be the most stunning one of the bunch. Wowzers...

Even the great Arthur Adams wasn't immune to the heavy handed patchwork of Romitas raiders. The composition on this cover really flows. All the monsters are placed perfectly. unlike the published version which i never really cared for. It was signed by Adams and P Craig Russell but I always thought Armando Gil had something to do with this cover. I like Armando Gil but he and Art Adams do not share the same aesthetic. What would possess the art department to butcher the this gorgeous cover? Thanks for "publishing" the original version here on CAF and setting history right

With your Subby this is my most preferred art in your collection. Best Storm image, best Storm period, best Storm costume, absolute mastery from Arthur & Craig (superb inking)! I only regret one thing, that internet didn't exist in the late 80's. This is definitively a gem I would have add in my collection. PS/expect for the whole image, perfect face, I do specially love the little demon pulling her hair.

Thank you my friend. I know how much you love that Subby. For you to compare this Storm to that piece is high praise indeed. I am so happy you like her. Of course, like the Subby, this piece is also not for sale. Sorry buddy! Wink!

You are an awful tease, Eric. I am sure when this poor sucker read the first two sentences, he started getting excited. Then the let down and the evil villain laugh at the end! Lol.

Haha!  Actually, Oli is a dear friend.  And I'm sure he knew my answer even before he made the proposal.  I think it was just his way of paying this piece the ultimate compliment.  And I understood that as well.  No teasing involved, I promise.  LOL!

I remember talking to both Arthur and Mignola when they were young single guys living in the next town over.  They were both huge fans of Craig's work.  I'm sure Arthur was thrilled to have PCR ink this one (along with issues 5, 6, and 7 as well).  Just lucky that I own three of them.

I was new to comic books when these came out - it was a great jumping on point. Reading the current issues but also the "Classic" book helped fill in blanks and round out my understanding of the mutant characters I'd grown to love so much.

Art is part of that, for me, so these covers are all nostalgia gold!

Looking at you 100th acquisition made me look back at this piece, in my opinion the best of Arthur's covers on Classic.  The two pieces perfectly represent the evolution of a character and of an artist.  Amazing!

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to make this connection.  For me, it's really a double evolution.  Not just of the character, but Arthur's style and growth as well.  Obviously in the case of this cover, he had a little help from Russell.  But as his skill and confidence grew, he quickly established himself to be his own best inker.  Honestly, one of the best things about this 40 year journey is not just being able to look back at an incredible body of work, but to see how this shy, quiet, completely untrained young comic fan turn himself into one of the medium's greatest living artists.  Thank you for the comment my friend.

I always enjoy seeing how different inkers tackled Art back in the day. Some were more successful than others, but PCR does such a graceful job. Lovely combo!
