Description
Now this is a pretty rare and uncommon item. Bruce Bairnsfather, a British cartoonist, created his character 'Ol Bill during WWI. 'Ol Bill became one of the most well known cartoon characters of WWI and is still revered today. Dave Breger created his character, G.I. Joe, in WWII. Along with Bill Mauldin's Willie and Joe, G.I. Joe (the G.I. standing for Government Issue) was among the most popular characters of the WWII era.

Bairnsfather was officially attached to the American Forces in Europe from 1942 to 1944. He started off with the American Army in Northern Ireland, and then was attached to the USAF at Chelveston, in the UK, where he was based from 1943 to 1944. This piece was done for Stars & Stripes magazine during WWII and features the icons of both wars shaking hands.

My thanks to Joe Bristow for the additional information.
