Description

Shadows was Richard Elson’s first professional series. The first episode was actually drawn twice. The writer, Peter Milligan, sent Richard Elson reams of notes on his first version and he decided to re-draw the entire thing rather than just try to amend it. Some panels and figures from the original version survived as past-up bits on the revised one.

Shadows was originally intended to be printed in black and white but one of the colour strips that 2000ad were planning to run at that time got delayed, so Tim Perkins was asked to colour Shadows up to fill the gap. The editorial team printed up comic sized copies of the pages onto Kentmere watercolour paper with all of the black line turned to light blue. Tim Perkins coloured over these with acrylics; a black-line acetate overlay was added over the colours before sending it off for print.

I have fond memories of discussing it each week with my late brother, who was a big fan of William Gibson at the time, so he lapped Shadows up. A good story with a surprising, downbeat ending. The art was a good match for the then inventive plot. There was talk of a sequel at the time, but Peter Milligan got very busy at DC/Vertigo and Richard Elson went off to draw Teenage Ninja Mutant Hero Turtles and it never happened.

A somewhat forgotten story that would be great to see reprinted one day.

The rest of episode one is below, in the additional images.

From prog 672, published 31st March 1990.

You're so lucky to have these. Such a great story and Richard's art on this series was just divine. A delight to see these in black and white.
