DescriptionIllustration from "The Pocket Chesterfield: A Certain Way to Honour, Wealth, Distinctions", by John Gordon Dorrance, 1920. The book presents a satirical look at one has to do (or not do) in order to become a gentleman in high society.This particular illustration is one of three by Hay in the book, and is titled, "A gentleman will not be seen at cribbage." It's derived from a chapter of 28 dos and don'ts, this one being #10, and starting out as, "A gentleman has ever some regard also to the choice of his amusements. If at cards, he will not be seen at cribbage, all-fours, or putt;..." Obvious (at least to me) influence from well known British illustrators of the period. Lovely, early pen & ink work by Hay.
