DescriptionAs a part of working out plots for the Crusaders All-New Adventures covers I started compiling lists of all of Archie's heroes (as all good geeks do). You wouldn't know it by glancing at any of their series but Archie actually have a whole mess of heroes. So many so that even including as many as I could in the Crusaders ideas there were still lots left out. As my idea with the Crusaders covers was to continue and "expand" the Archie universe it struck me that a companion series, like Marvel Spotlight, would be a perfect way to showcase folks. Lots of bad title ideas later the obvious hit me and Red Circle Spotlight it was.The Ultra Men appeared in only one issue back in the 60's, Mighty Crusaders #5. Back then they were Captain Flag, the Fox and the Web. Clearly thrown together for a quick cameo the name was too cool not to do anything with. As Captain Flag was in the original it made sense to include him in this version too. Then it was just rummaging around looking for other characters to be in the group. In the end it was Shadowwoman, a new version of Archie's 1960's take on the Shadow. Fireball II, a new hero with a GAer's name. Red Ruby, a slight tweak on the 40's Red Rube. The Golem, a former villain turned hero. Green Falcon II, a descendant of the Middle Ages hero. Black Jack II, daughter of the original. And, of course, Captain Flag II, a new version of Archie's other star-spangled hero. Some really nice work from MC on this one. A gorgeous John Buscema-like face on the Nameless One, the Gadgeteer's platform is wonderfully Kirby and the Metal Witch really takes on major league villain status with that pose. A great, great cover based on the classic X-Men / Teen Titans from Simonson. A special thanks to Chris Ivy for creating the logo for this series. I'd come up with something on my own that I liked but, as always, Chris's idea was perfect! And now she's in color too! Javi Salones brings his beautiful colors to this 1st issue and nails that classic feel. As always, I hope Crusaders fans approve :) Original size 22x17 ------- In This Issue ... In the wake of the devastating attack by the Gladiator's Legion of Juggernauts, the US government decides that the country could use another group of heroes, just in case. So Lt. Mark Harris is given the mantle of Captain Flag and the task of recruiting an all new version of the Ultra Men. Can Flag's motley group of heroes - the mysterious Shadowwoman and Golem, the seemingly eternal Red Ruby, heroic heirs Green Falcon II and Black Jack II as well as the brand new Fireball II - come together in time to stop the nefarious plans of the Nameless One and the Mad Gadgeteer?? A double sized adventure for only 75¢! This Issue's Cover ... The Nameless One, the Gadgeteer and the Metal Witch flaunt their villainy over the Ultra Men - Shadowwoman, Fireball II, Red Ruby, the Golem, Green Falcon II, Captain Flag II and Black Jack II. I'm ashamed to say I'm not familiar with the Ultra Men, but I am familiar with MC's great art! 11x17 landscaped is like two commissions in one! Outstanding!!

And don't worry about missing the Ultra Men. They really were a "blink and you missed them" kinda group :)

Now I finally know that the X-Men/Titans crossover cover is a homage to Red Circle Spotlight 1. Very cool

I had no idea that Shadowwoman existed! I knew that Archie's take on The Shadow was a bit different back in the day, but was not aware of his successor. Anyway, great work from MC!

Great commission by MC, I really love his energy and I was around for the one shot appearance of the Ultra Men, three characters that i really liked.
Sadly to this day I have never seen a page of orignal art for Crusaders 4 or 5.
Keep them coming Kevin!
