Description

Part 2 of the classic Demon in a Bottle story line. Some argue that a great villain makes a great hero. While this is true, so does showing a personal weakness that many can relate to. Stark's constant internal struggle shows that even he is vulnerable to this debilitating enemy despite wealth, intellect, & Iron Man armor.

McDonne'l and O'neil picked up on a great story arc that was established by Layton and Michelinie. While they have said they were just doing their job and alcohol was the enemy of the month, the story has grown overtime to one of Iron Man's most classic arcs allowing others to build on their memorable run.

Here we have the title page showing Tony facing the temptation of his greatest internal enemy. We all too share an communal addiction in this wonderful hobby. Thank goodness our liquid of choice is the ink on the paper.

This is an incredibly powerful depiction of that storyline, and the "villain". Such a great description of the significance of this work and the storyline. Thanks for sharing!

James, this is a powerful splash on many levels. Dennis O'Neil is one of the greatest writers ever, and he did not disappoint with "The Empty Shell" storyline, which began here! Luke McDonnell is a great artist, who had a very memorable artistic run on Iron Man! One can look at that close-up of Tony Stark's hand reaching for the bottle a thousand times, and every time its impact is felt! Classic and historic page, indeed!

Often, sequels are pale shadows of the original. I don't remember thinking that when I read this story arc all those years ago. Under O'Neil's steady guidance and McDonnell's moody pencils, this story read more like a natural regression into an all too common addiction. This page reflects one of those moments in comics that so strongly imitate life and contribute to the deep rooted nostalgia that drives this hobby. Congratulations on a great acquisition.
