Description

When I started reading comics in 1991 at the age of 11, X-Men and its family of titles were, with a handful of exceptions, the only books that mattered to me. I had heard whispers of the epic 'x' crossovers of years past, but until X-Cutioner's Song came along about a year into my new obsession, I hadn't been lucky enough to experience one for myself. To say that I was ready for it was an understatement.

X-Force #16 (which is part 4 of the crossover) was the first issue I was able to get my hands on. I remember riding home from the local baseball card shop and agonizing over whether or not to rip open the sealed poly-bag. I would have bought two copies, but the store only had one left. Thankfully, my impatience prevailed and I tore open the bag only to find X-Force on the verge of all-out war with the X-Men and X-Factor. I wasn't sure why they were fighting as I hadn't read the first 3 parts, but it didn't matter. I was riveted. I was so caught up in the hype that I barely even noticed that (for reasons I was completely oblivious to) this particular story wasn't being drawn by Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld and crew. Some guy named Greg Capullo was doing the art in this issue, but that didn't matter because we were finally going to find out the secret of Cable and Stryfe's mysterious past! Besides, Liefeld would probably be back soon. (Seriously, I had no idea what Image was or that Liefeld had in fact been gone from the book for a few months at that point.)

Capullo would of course go on to do a year long run on X-Force that, for me, became the definitive run of the title's early years. Just a quick peek at any of his issues and I'm instantly 12 again. I must have read X-Force #16 (along with his other issues) 100 times. To be able to get my hands on this page, which is even more stunning in person than it is onscreen, is a dream come true. Many thanks to James for his willingness to make a deal and making the 12 year old in me so happy.
