Baggywrinkles sketch by Lucy Bellwood 2015

      Lucy Bellwood is a cartoonist and tallship sailor. Last year, I learned about her kickstarter project for Baggywrinkles: A Lubber’s Guide to Life at Sea. Since my teen years, I’ve read history books about the early years of the US Navy especially the actions against the Barbary pirates of North Africa and the War of 1812. I’ve read the novels of CS Forester’s Horatio Hornblower, Dudley Pope’s Lord Ramage, and Rafael Sabatini’s Captain Blood. Lucy is only the second cartoonist I know with such love for sailing ships. My first chance to meet her was in Seattle at Emerald City Comicon 2016 when she drew the USS Constitution. The book with stickers and temporary tattoos arrived recently.
