Description

As I have mentioned before, there isn't much I can say about On Stage that hasn't been said.

On Stage was Leonard Starr's magnum opus; the quintessential photo-realistic postwar-America soap opera comic strip. Artistically and story-wise (at least in the beginning) it rivaled the likes of Alex Raymond's Rip Kirby and Stan Drake's The Heart of Juliet Jones.

This particular strip comes from August 1957, six months after it began appearing on 10 February of the same year. While this doesn't feature Mary in the strip, it does show Starr's wonderful drawing and attention to detail as Louise, the hat-check girl, is caught skimming money from tips. Another entry in my gallery has a daily from the seventh month of the strip... when Mary first meets future husband Pete Fletcher.

As many know, Starr donated a large portion of his art to Syracuse University (similar to what Caniff did with Ohio State). That makes these early strips especially rare.
