DescriptionThis is the first appearance of Corrosive Man. Dreamed up by Norm Breyfogle and Alan Grant.Character info: Derek Mitchell was a Gotham City police officer, who gave in to the city’s pervasive corruption,. Unlike many of his fellow officers, Derek Mitchell’s involvement was discovered, leading to his arrest and imprisonment. Mitchell escaped from Blackgate Penitentiary and sought revenge against Mortimer Kadaver, the killer who’d set him up for arrest. Eluding the police seeking him, he was down at the Gotham docks when a bolt of lightning struck. The ensuing explosion of a building doused him in a unique blend of chemicals and hazardous waste. This apparently activated Mitchell’s meta-gene and altered his body to emit a highly corrosive acid. Since his debut he's appeared again from time to time and even fought Azreal at one point. He may not be a household name but I'm glad to add a first appearance of a Bat-Villian by legend Norm Breyfogle. Social/Sharing |

Really cool page by one of my favorite artists.I'm surprised I don't have a larger Batman collection (I just added a page today)and I agree it's super cool to have a first appearance.

Breyfogle's style remains instantly recognizable. He had the unenviable task of becoming the main artist on Detective Comics (and various other Batbooks) during the "Dark Knight" era, took the art in a different direction than expected and managed to build himself a solid fan base in the process. Also, along with writers Alan Grant and John Wagner, he added several new villains to Batman's Rogues' Gallery. Corrosive Man may not have entered the pantheon the way the Ventriloquist did, but he's indicative of the way the creators tried to expand things and how Breyfogle's style played its part in that expansion.
