Introduced in issue #18 of Captain Marvel Adventures, Mary Marvel, aka Mary Batson, aka Mary Bromfield, was the long-lost sister of Billy Batson, who also enjoyed the powers bestowed upon her brother by uttering the magic word "SHAZAM". Predating Supergirl by more than a decade, Mary Marvel was one of the first female superheroes to rise to prominence in the Golden Age. It is obvious in this impressive cover illustration that Mary Marvel was modeled after The Wizard of Oz star Judy Garland, who was the prototypical all-American gal during the WWII-era. The masterfully rendered art depicts the heroine riding astride a giant butterfly, while presenting a classic pin-up smile and a little cheesecake to boot. Cover art from the Golden Age is not easy to come by, and this wonderful Jack Binder-signed piece is a one-of-a-kind treat.
