DescriptionIt's been quite a while since I've added a non-US comic art page to my collection... So, I'm happy to have found this particular one...While mostly renowned for his Iznogoud series (wondefully scripted by René Goscinny of Asterix fame), I must admit I looked elsewhere when it came to find a good Jean Tabary page for my gallery. Wholly scripted and drawn by Tabary himself, Totoche is a fine example of his completely mastered sense of storytelling and precise line and ink work. But it also displays his own view on characterisation, that I have always found quite unique. While his cast of characters is clearly and classically divided in 4 parts: the good, the bad, the ambivalent and the rest, he gives them all some interesting twists. The good guys are straight to the point of purity, the bad guys are evil beyond redemption, the ambivalent ones constantly cross the line between the two till the end of the story and the rest is mostly hapless passers-by, but with an uncanny sense of the absurd. Totoche himself is the leader of a gang of kids living in the working-class neighbourhoods of Paris in the late 50's-early 60's. His own presence is generally enough to trigger a series of events that, however improbable, will always turn out right. This story "Le bolide", is a perfect example of this, as it depicts how Totoche finds himself running on and winning a Grand Prix race with a car built by local teenage mechanic (uh... sure!). What is really interesting is, however pure he appears to be, he is still very real, there is nothing abstract about him: he has to deal with doubts, fears and his interactions with others are often complex and shifting. This page displays some of the magic of the series with the top-half taken by one of these very absurd sequences, while the bottom half shows how Totoche moves the story forward and quietly pushes aside useless stances and prejudices by bringing along a girl to the gang against, at least at first, the clearly-voiced opinions of some of the kids... Early 60's stuff, granted, but still valid today, I think... Social/Sharing |
