Description

Tom Bancroft posted an Inktober drawing of Kiki's Delivery Service on his Facebook page and I asked if it was available since this was the first time I'd seen him depict one of Hayao Miyazaki's characters. Tom promised to save it for me as we were going to see each other at the CTNX Animation Expo in Burbank, CA. In the next couple days, he posted a drawing of Mr. Incredible and son Dash from Brad Bird's The Incredibles, but it turned out he used the back of the Kiki page. Tom was upset with himself and was going to do another drawing for me. In November, I found the Bancroft Brothers booth at CTNX on Friday, but he was doing a panel. I looked through the art portfolio and found Mr. Incredible and Dash. I peeked behind the page and found Kiki. Another page featured Elastigirl and daughter Violet. I caught up to Tom later and it turns out he didn't get the chance to do another drawing. He wanted to keep The Incredibles drawings together and offered a good price for the pair with the Kiki as a bonus. I'm doubly thrilled, but with a bit of a display dilemma.

Tom Bancroft is an animator and print cartoonist. He was supervising animator for the dragon Mushu in Disney's Mulan and spent about twelve years working on Disney feaures Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Alladin, and others. Tom is the creator of the Opposite Forces comic book which featured covers by J. Scott Campbell and Frank Cho. He's written the instructional books Creating Characters with Personality and Character Mentor: Learn by Example to Use Expressions, Poses, and Staging to Bring Your Characters to Life. I first met Tom when he was an exhibitor at San Diego in 2002. Tom has founded Taught by a Pro, an online series of art instruction by Ruben Aquino, Tom Bancroft, Tony Bancroft, Sandro Cleuzo, Terry Dodson, Michel Gagne, John Pomeroy, and Tom Richmond. Tom has set up accounts at twitter, tumblr, and deviantart. I love listening to his podcast with his brother Tony: Bancroft Brothers Animation Podcast. They've talked to Glen Keane, Andreas Deja, Tomm Moore, Victoria Ying, Ming-Na Wen, and many more.
