Description
A great Green Lantern Corps cover by Patrick “Pat” Gleason & Wayner Faucher.

The Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi era on the GL books is already a historic run which I enjoyed tremendously. They really redefined and expended the GL lore within the DC universe to great success and importance. Part of my enjoyment was always the impeccable art by many great artists of which Pat Gleason was no small part. He was already very good on his Aquaman run but soared to new artistic height on GL.

Now I find this particular cover to be particularly well conceived and executed.

For one the alien winged girl quite attracts the reader’s eye. She is super sexy despite her alieness and her playful attitude quite reinforces that aspect. Her own finger in her mouth is a nice touch. Her eye glancing at the reader, making him or her her accomplice, is exceptionally drawn (a trait I find that Gleason is really good at by the way). Gleason draws great (strong) women even if he is hardly considered as a good girl artist.

The fact that Guy looks completely subservient is also greatly portrayed. For instance, his eyes indicate no one is home right now. The pill in his mouth is obvious (and indicates control by the girl) but the fact that he is completely drenched in shadows from a light source coming from below is a great choice. It also conveys a somewhat eerie feeling to the overall piece. To a lesser extent it reminds me of Wrightson’s House of Secrets 103 cover (which is not sexy at all and only horrific but I’m speaking about shadows used to convey emotion).

About technique now, the inks are quite superb here and faultless. The precision of the all the tiny inked lines on her wings is incredible and really underlines the fact that for her beauty, she is an alien with alien features.

In the end, a great cover, both sexy and eerie (not easy to pull) by a fantastic art team at the top of its game.

This is part 2 of my yearly CAF B-Day party.
