I loved all those Wildstorm miniseries specials, annuals and pin ups books back in the 90s which featured all the Wildstorm alumni, youngest talents and invited guests. It also allowed many “slower” artists to express their art with a schedule more suited to their needs.

The second Stormwatch special featured art by a young Cully Hamner, fresh off his star making stint of Green Lantern Mosaic ( a Gem of the Month in Diamond’s previews back in those days for those who remember and care).

While his art and storytelling were cruder and certainly not up to his actual incredibly high standards back in those days, I already had fallen in love with Cully’s art. Great (more) angular art and great attention to storytelling.

I don’t remember much of that story safe for the pursuit of Deathtrap and his group of villains by one of the Stormwatch teams lead by Flashpoint. Here we pretty much have the final confrontation between the two characters in which Flashpoint decides to spare him which seems contrary to his incendiary personality and probably with the help of his teammate Sunburst.

The tension is palpable through the heavy use of shadows, downside angles and several close ups on Flashpoint’s faces (I find that that last panel is quite exemplary in terms of depicting the correct emotion).

A very nice page all around. Competent inks by Mike Christian.
