Description

Slingbees needed money for an emergency so I set up a commission with them. I haven't really done much in the anime/manga category lately which made me decide to get something from a series I've ignored too much.

Yukari's one of the few reoccurring human characters in the "Higanbana" series. She's the main character of the "Utopia" chapter, which explored bullying in school and the ways to address it. Yukari had been having problems in school ever since her mom died, and the effect on her home life made her an easy target for the bullies in her class. Then, a new girl named Reiko transferred in and suddenly everyone was bullying this kid. Yukari didn't engage because she tried to make herself less of a target, but began to feel guilty when Reiko explained she was happy to be bullied if it meant other kids weren't bothered. Yukari became increasingly upset with this mindset and discussed it with Reiko...

Who then revealed herself as Sumire of the Twilight, one of the spirits haunting the school. Sumire goes from class to class creating bullies who then get spread to different classes and bully others, until the bullied children are killed or commit suicide and she feeds on their souls. After getting in a battle with Marie Moriya, one of the benevolent spirits in the school, Sumire decided to pull out of Yukari's class knowing every kid would turn their attention on her. The following day, the bullying was so severe the only reprieve Yukari was granted from getting raped was when she fell down the stairs in the hallway trying to flee. As a result she was out sick for several days. Her classmates were practically going through withdrawal without her around to torment, which Sumire was savoring thinking of all the potential victims to feast on. Until Higanbana, one of the higher level spirits above Sumire, orchestrated a bus accident that killed all of Yukari's classmates so she could feed on them.

After moving into a new homeroom, Yukari took a more active stance against bullying and spoke out when she saw kids getting harassed.

Yukari's designed after Rika Furude from "Higurashi," and shares several similarities in regards to their personal struggles.

The thistle in Yukari's mouth is a nod to her sequel story, which pits her against both Sumire and Azami, another spirit who uses her power to turn tormented kids into bullies to avenge themselves. Yukari turns the tables on Azami and Sumire by using her newfound strength and aggressiveness to become a tyrant in her classroom, scaring her classmates into behaving and stomping out any bullying on her radar.
