Words can’t express how incredibly thrilled I am to add this to my collection! I’d been looking for 3 or 4 of my favorite Rowena paintings (this was one of them) online when I finally stumbled across Rowena’s Facebook page. There hadn’t been any activity for a couple of years, but I figured I’d send a message anyway on the chance she might still be monitoring it. Within a day or two, her partner Kim emailed me back and a couple of messages later, I learned Rowena still had this for sale! I can’t believe I hadn’t tried finding her online sooner!

The image was originally used as the cover artwork for “Retief of the CDT”, by Ken Laumer, published by Timescape/Pocket Books in 1981. A year later in 1982, it was used as a variant cover for “Retief and the Warlords”, also published by Timescape/Pocket. It was then featured as a full page image in her first art book, “The Fantastic Art of Rowena”, published by Pocket Books in 1983. It was also reprinted as #75 of Rowena’s trading card set, issued by FPG in 1993. I recently discovered that it was used as the cover art for an Italian omnibus edition of Dominic Flandry stories (Poul Anderson's space rouge character) titled "Dominic Flandry - Agente dell'Impero Terrestre", published in 1983 by Editrice Nord as part of their Cosmo Serie Oro. Classici della Narrativa di Fantascienza line. Finally, it was used as the cover art for a German edition of Thomas F. Monteleone's novel "Ozymandias", published by Moewig in 1983. Also featured in Vincent Di Fate’s “Infinite Worlds: The Fantastic Visions of Science Fiction“ published by The Wonderland Press in 1997.
