Description

Coloured dies on Arches watercolour paper, mounted to 14.5" x 19.5" board. Date unknown, likely circa 1990s. It used to be a standard joke to say that you bought Playboy to read the articles rather than look at the photos of naked women. Nobody believed that, but to have said that you bought it for the cartoons might have been realistic. The quality of the magazine's humour was exceptional, both visually as well as conceptually.

From September 1964 up into 2016 when the magazine went through a poorly-thought out remodelling, Doug Sneyd's wonderful artwork graced the pages with not-quite monthly regularity, and the issue that didn't have a piece of his was disappointing as a result. Hugh Hefner himself was actively involved in every stage of the cartoons, from initial concept, through rough layout, to finished art. And yet, in spite of that rigorous process, occasionally a gag would be approved, paid for, but then ultimately left out of the regular magazine's lineup.

The reasons varied, and could be anything from unforeseen space limitations, to additional ad pages sold, to editorial whim. A few made their way into cartoon collections put out supplementary to the monthly publication. Regardless of the rationale, the cartoons were every bit as good as their published counterparts, and it was a disservice to the readers to omit them from the public eye. This is one of those lost opportunities, a perfectly suitable Sneyd gem, possibly seen here for the first time anywhere.
