Description
Thomas Fogarty (1873-1938) was a prolific master illustrator during the first third of the 20th century, illustrating numerous books and contributing to the most popular periodicals of the day, including Harper’s, Century magazine, Ladies Home Journal and Good Housekeeping. Fogarty was also renowned for his work as an instructor at the Art Students League, teaching the likes of Norman Rockwell, McClelland Barclay and Walter Biggs. I am quite pleased to be able to offer a tremendous example of Fogarty’s masterful pen work, which appeared in the September 1901 issue of the Century magazine. The illustration accompanied a work of fiction by Charles de Lano Hine, titled “Gossip of the Switch-Shanty” and features a group of railroad men being regaled with stories by colleagues. The caption for the printed piece reads, “The brakeman…takes advantage of the laugh that follows”. The pen work is masterful throughout, as Fogarty played with thick and thin lines to take advantage of the figures’ placement in the space. You can see the glue stains in the margin of the illustration. This is from an old matting job, but the glue does not enter into the live art area. There is also a crack on the back of the board, but that does not come onto the front of the board at all. The piece was drawn on heavy illustration board stock. The artwork measures 14¼”x 11¾” and is just about the nicest example of pen & ink illustration that you’ll run across. $250.00 + 13.00 Priority shipping.
