Description

Marvel has recently been digging deep to publish some hidden treasures by some of their most famous artists. With the re-launch of the Punisher with issue #1, they decided to put Mike Zeck in the spotlight and publish some of his lesser known (but spectacular) pieces as incentive covers. Additionally, Mike Zeck commissioned Marvel to create some special Punisher variants to sell at convention appearances and through his website. This is the cover to Zeck's Punisher #2 variant.

This piece was originally created as a limited edition print for the 2014 Big Wow Convention in San Jose. This show was the first West Coast appearance that Mike had made in many years and also timed with the "Raw Fury" exhibit of his Mike's art the at Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco.

You'll notice that the original art doesn't exactly match the final printed artwork. Mike had originally designed this with skulls on the background target. But, he ultimately decided against including them and made some edits on the computer, adding the blood-splatter effect as well.

What I also love about this piece is that Mike had drawn a large detailed version of the head before he committed the image to paper. This head sketch is amazing and stands alone by itself.

I always felt like this was a cover-quality piece and now so it's great to now see this as a full-fledged variant cover.

A Punisher with his big jaw and big guns in the classic Mike Zeck " Circle of blood" style is always a pleasure for the eyes. Masterpiece.
