The Second Life of Dr. Mirage #6 pg1 feat. Shadowman

Another one of my favorite Valiant books not only because Bernard brought his best to the table but because it was featuring one of the first Asian superheroes in the comicverse! Other Valiant characters I LOVE are Master Darque, his sister, and Shadowman - so this was a must get.

I've mentioned in other posts that as an immigrant to the United States from Hong Kong and as a fan of media, it was almost impossible to find an Asian face to look up to. So often we would find ourselves relating with other minorities on Television yet so far from our own cultural familiarities or tastes.

Bernard later told me a story about how Bob Layton had approach him to help co-create Dr. Mirage and he said yes, but he had to be Asian. It was great to hear that Bob supported at such a time when it just didn't make commercial sense to put an Asian on screen.

Perhaps he was a bit ahead of his time as Crazy Rich Asians didn't hit until 20+ years later! Nevertheless, Bernard and Bob fought the good fight by introducing a book that highlighted diversity before any media executive or creator would've ever foresaw #OscarSoWhite
