Circa 1923 The "LOST MARS TIMLIN" - This is the Original Artwork and Calligraphy for the Limited Edition book: THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS: A FANTASY Told and Pictured by William M. Timlin (George G. Harrap & Co. London, 1923) 2000 copies printed. - Image Size of Painting: 8 1/8 x 11 inches. Image Size of Calligraphic Text: 10 1/4 x 13 1/2 inches. Framed Size: approx. 30 1/2 x 22 inches. The painting and text are matted under protective glass, and secured in a fine wood frame with scroll relief pattern and decorative gilt. Condition: Art, calligraphy, and Frame all Fine. - So what we have here is the LOST MARS TIMLIN, painted for the book deemed the most beautiful fantasy book of its day - THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS - but never used in the finished book. With this wonderful discovery, we have a new reason to return to a beloved classic one more time for a new view! - William Mitcheson Timlin (1892-1943) Artist-Architect. Born in England, lived most of his life in South Africa. His chief artistic influences being Edmund Dulac, Arthur Rackham, and Aubrey Beardsley. He designed many important buildings in Kimberley South Africa while pursuing his art interests. He did a number of watercolor fantasies as well as pastels, oils, periodical illustrations and etchings and his work was exhibited regularly. Timlin began work on THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS for his son in 1921. It took him two years and grew to 48 color plates with 48 pages of text accompanying each plate. The publisher George Harrap, was so impressed with Timlin's work that he printed the book without typesetting, as presented to him with the original calligraphy. THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS has become a Fantasy Classic.
