DescriptionA great poster of Deadpool by Ed McGuinness. Done during his run on the first ongoing serie in 1997 for Wizard 71.I enjoyed the first serie as written by Joe Kelly a lot. For me this run is the defining moment of the character, much like what Priest did on Black Panther around the same time. The title was fun and sometime crazy but Deadpool was taken seriously and was sometime extremely dangerous like the contract killer mercenary he was created as. For me it was the perfect balance for the character. Whereas nowadays, I find few writer than can do him justice, the emphasis being heavily put on the craziness, the goofiness and the breaking the 4rth wall aspect. Bang bang you are dead! does not work for me. Or maybe it is a case of the “it was better back when” syndrome which I have always consciously fought against as each era offer its own artistic gems. And of course, the art Ed McGuinness whose name I was already following on any title he was on was a huge incentive. His art has reached new stratospheric heights since then but all the elements that make his style enjoyable (or not) were already present. The over the top Manga/Capcom influences, the larger than life action scene, the clear if not always impeccable storytelling, etc… This poster sums up this run/era of the character for me. The first 33 issues written by Kelly and/or first 10 or so penciled by Ed. The main cast is here. An incredibly cool looking Deadpool that I prefer ninja-looking with katana swords as opposed to with machine guns. An over proportionate T-Ray looking all menacing. Weasel and Typhoid Mary and a fun sneaked in Blind Al (I had to refresh my memory for those names). The cross-like composition is simple while effective. I also like the “X” made by Weasel and Typhoid and the matching Katanas to Blind Al’s head. Again, symmetry. The art is super smooth and clean, the inks are sharp. I don't like the terms "cover worthy" which I find are a bit too often or easily thrown out in our hobby but I believe this one would qualify (in fact, I suspect it may have been an unused or rejected cover then converted as a poster). Now there is a second Deadpool poster art piece which I wouldn’t mind owning and I would be a happy collector. But this will happily suffice for now as I’m quite happy with this one. This is the 8th part of my 2019 B-Day on CAF. Social/Sharing |

I remember this from Wizard distinctly! This is a great representative shot of McGuinness’s Deadpool run. I liked his exaggerated cartoony look for the character and you’ve got him front and center here! Congrats!

Love Ed's work on Deadpool, this to me was the run that defined the character. Congrats!
