Description

Daan Jippes is a Dutch cartoonist who drew Disney comics for European publications. I discovered his work when Bruce Hamilton's Gladstone Comics printed his work in the 1980's and 1990's. I found it the best looking Donald Duck artwork since Carl Barks. When my brother's Stuart Ng Books published an English-language version of Daan Jippes: Adventurer in Comics and Animation museum exhibition catalog by Jan-Willem de Vries and Bob Foster, the cartoonist arranged to travel from the Netherlands to California to do signing sessions at WonderCon Anaheim. Daan Jippes spoke at Disney Animation Studios and Dreamworks Animation in the days before the convention. When the cartoonist arrived at the convention and settled down, Stuart and I perused the artwork for sale and made our purchases. In four two-hour sessions over Friday and Saturday, Daan signed for some longtime duck fans and some colleagues from his time at the Disney Studio. In the excitement of buying artwork and getting my own books signed on Friday, I had neglected to get the Dutch Comics Museum exhibit catalog. On Saturday, I picked up the book and Daan considered what he should draw before deciding on this self portrait.
