“Mirage or For Real” (03/21/1967)

A native Bostonian, Germano became a full-time cartoonist in 1948, at age 24, after serving in WWII. Among other positions, he worked as the editorial and sports cartoonist for the Brockton Enterprise from 1963-1990.

Eddie Germano was 43 years old in 1967, with a worldview that was clearly representative of his generation. My own parents, born in 1935, were cut from identical cloth.

One of the things I like about topical art and illustration is how it conveys a sense of time, and that also includes attitudes and mores.

And there are plenty of things to say about this one. But, leaving all the obvious –isms aside, the winter of 1967 was rough. The largest blizzard (still) to ever hit the Midwest, and the New England area was just about to begin (March 21-22) its third significant, category 2 storm that winter.
