DescriptionI rarely buy art because of nostalgia, but I could not resist picking up this sweet, sweet Timbertoes page from a likely early 1950s issue of Highlights for Children. John Gee illustrated a children's book with the same characters in the 1930s and brought them to the magazine in the early 50s. This one is marked with a number 8, but I have no idea if that refers to the eighth installment or something else. I have some research to do.I read Highlights for Children as a young 'un, and while I found "Goofus and Gallant" to be simplistically moralistic, I gravitated to this wooden family, with the gentle humor and sweet drawing. All told, I have seen five Timbertoes pages hit the market, and that's only in the last two years. Heritage recently offered three pages for auction, and I thought this one was the best of the bunch. It has everything I could want in the feature. The drawing is quite wonderful, and I've added some detail shots elsewhere on this page. Social/Sharing |
