I have admit upfront, I'm not the biggest fan of manga and anime. I appreciate the craftsmanship and detail-intensive work that it displays, but it's never been an art style that I felt a very strong passion for. Artist Adam Warren, however, is my exception to that.

What I've always liked about his work in this style, is the sheer energy and fun he packs into almost every image he does. He's having a good time doing it, so it makes it easier for you to do so when you view it. While his style would develop a more cartoony edge over the years, this piece is from early in his career, when he stuck closer to a more "traditional" manga-esque style. I'm not really familiar with the saga of Appleseed, but you see all the classic manga "tells" here. The big eyes, the millions of blast lines, the shiny metal surfaces, it all reminds me of some of my favorite anime cartoon series I grew up watching as a child, like Star Blazers, Battle Of The Planets, and the Macross Saga. I also like the use of very vibrant colors here, too, which didn't quite translate the same in the published version.

Adam Warren is certainly one of the artists responsible for the craze that came to be known as "Ameri-Manga." And I'm glad to have such a sweet image, from early in his career, that shows it so beautifully.
