"Don Donald" originally appeared in the Jan. 1937 issue of "Good Housekeeping." Walt Disney, in arrangement w/"Good Housekeeping," produced one-page adaptations from 1934-1944 to promote their animated shorts. This is detailed in the book "Walt Disney's Mickey And The Gang - Classic Stories In Verse" by Gemstone Publishing. The beautiful, fully-painted art has hand-colored "Walt Disney's Silly Symphony - 'Don Donald'" titles at top. Art comes in attractive 28.5x34" wood frame w/Plexiglas cover and custom brass nameplate. Piece features Donald Duck in his first starring cartoon role as well as the first appearance of Donna Duck, Donald's girlfriend who would eventually become Daisy Duck. Art was done by Tom Wood in five panels w/watercolor over pen and ink. Scenes show Donald arriving on Basil the burro, playing guitar and presenting Donna w/a flowering cactus. Second panel shows Donald bowing w/sombrero in hand, a small ladder at Basil's side so Donna could mount him w/ease. Third panel shows an angry Donald pushing a stubborn Basil. Last panel strays from original cartoon as Donald serenades Donna who remains atop Basil as he plods forward, chasing after the ear of corn Donald has suspended over his head. First main panel has .5" area of staining. Third panel has two .5" areas of correctional fluid at left margin. Last panel has another .5" area of correctional fluid but these in no way affect art, which displays Exc. as framed and is ready for display. Beautiful art and an important early appearance of the character that would go on to become Daisy Duck.
