DescriptionWhen this mini-series came out back in 1992, little did anyone realize just how significant it would be, not only within the next few years, but the next few decades. This book is largely seen by most as the beginnings of the "Knightfall" saga. It introduced us to the shadowy organization called "The Order of St. Dumas" and its right-hand soldier, Azrael (who would later take the place of Bruce Wayne as Batman)! While this page seems to be much more focused on the villain of this tale (that being the Demon Lord Biis), all the primary players of this event are present on the page (with Azrael in shadow in the first panel and a Batman close-up in the last one). Watching Biis "gear up" for action reminds me of some of the great action films I grew up watching in the 80's and 90's (remember Rambo doing a scene like this?). It's a perfect scene to get you primed for the action to come. Artistically, this is probably just about the best work of Joe Quesada's career. Of course, when you have a master talent like Kevin Nowlan backing you up on inks, you'd be hard-pressed to not have that be the case. Nowlan's inks bring a tightness to the pencils, that makes it unmistakable that it is Nowlan inking, but leaves them enough room to breath, so you can still tell it's a Quesada product through and through. It's a titanic combo of artistic power, which is just another reason this tale has kept such resonance over the years. It's always gratifying to get a piece from a major event. But to have one that help set off the phenomena that was "Knightfall," that is something that makes it extra special. And also a more than welcome addition to my personal comic art collection! This run was my favorite of all of DC in the 90's. Congrats on a nice page from this memorable series.
