Description

It’s not often you get a cover like this.

For a very brief time, Marvel Comics experimented with a “widescreen format” sideways-orientation for comicbooks it dubbed “MarvelScope.” To my knowledge, it was only used on some of the X-Men annuals of the time, and one obscure series called “Eden’s Trail.” The MarvelScope format permitted artists to explore sweeping, cinematic scenes like this one on a single page, rather than requiring a double-page spread that was interrupted where the pages met. Only some artists seemed capable of making proper use of the new format however, and it was soon scuttled, leaving pages and covers in “MarvelScope” orientation quite rare, some with lovely vistas to display, yet economical of size for framing.

Larocca opted only for pencils, and no inks whatsoever on this cover. Honestly, inks would have vanished the subtlely varying values of graphite that help lend a sense of dimensionality to the waves, ambiguity to the mist and glow from the lightning. He made the right choice, I think.

Now, then — the character…

…it looks like Storm, doesn’t it?

I almost wonder if that’s who Salvador Larocca secretly wanted to draw, and so decided to make use of the artistic liberties this piece afforded him in depicting the inner workings of a mind.

Believe it or not, this is actually Rogue, depicted in a stormy sea-like setting, seeming to represent the tempest of her mind while keeping at bay the Shadow King, who makes an appearance opposite her in this issue, as she mentally dukes it out with him while trying to connect Bishop to the Aboriginal mutant (and his grandfather) Gateway. It’s a wonderful, moody seascape that mystifies with swirls of foam and glare from the surface of realistic waves, yet continues to draw the eye back to our heroine.

Because of Rogue’s unique history of absorbing not only powers, but indeed entire personalities (sometimes at war with their host), on occasion a story will give us a glimpse of the inside of her mind. Such scenes should be key for any serious fan/collector of the mysterious Rogue.

This is the first piece I’m putting up for sale… …this beautiful painting in pencil.

Do kindly pardon the crop of the scan; I've a very small scanner, and had to "marry" two images, and cut off the unnecessary parts. I'll post a photo so you can see the whole thing soon.

This is absolutely, majestically, wonderfully gorgeous.  Your description is awesome, and I entirely agree that inking this piece would probably have diminished it... (although it would have been fun to see that version as well :) ).

Beautiful piece!  I hope you find a good home for it!
