Description

“Curtain Time” (July 19, 1984)
By Charles Phillip Bissell (1926 - )
8.5 x 12, ink and wash on board

In 1960, Boston Globe cartoonist Phil Bissell, working for $25 a day, was handed an assignment that would change his life—and the lives of fans of the brand-new AFL football team coming to Boston. “Sports editor Jerry Nason came to me and he said, ‘They’ve decided to call the team the Boston Patriots. You better have a cartoon ready for tomorrow’s edition.’” Bissel’s “Pat Patriot” cartoon was the Patriot’s logo from 1961-1992.

The Democratic National Convention nominated Walter Mondale on July 18, with Geraldine Ferraro as his VP running mate. This cartoon is a commentary to an event the night before.

On the evening of July 17, according to a NYT report “one major participant in the convention-as-electronic-event had turned off the television, perhaps forever transforming the manner in which future conventions would be covered by television: ABC, impatient with a scheduling lag on Jesse Jackson's speech - which that network considered the only newsworthy part of the evening - cut away from the event and put on a rerun of Hart to Hart, a segment of one of its canceled detective series. It was the plug-pull heard 'round the broadcast world. The moment ABC viewers across the country saw Robert Wagner and Stephanie Powers in a screeching car chase car instead of the presentation of the Democratic platform, an era of pro-forma public-affairs responsibility in television had effectively been challenged.”

“Far from apologizing for its decision, ABC stood by it emphatically. One of its vice presidents for news, David Burke, said he saw a future in which ABC would provide special bulletins from national political conventions only when events justified breaking away from the network's regular programming. During the week, ABC's executive producer for the convention coverage, Jeff Gralnick, had referred over and over to political conventions as television ‘dinosaurs.’”

And now it is intentionally a circus.

"It's out duty to the (news) organization to get more clicks... how do you think this all gets paid for?"
