Description

This dramatic Curt Swan & Murphy Anderson Superman and Supergirl page comes from a story from Action Comics #398 (1971) called "Spawn of the Unknown". Superman responds to the call of an African game keeper who tells him that a nearby volcano is causing a plague that is somehow turning jungle beasts into plants. In this page we see Supergirl herself twisted into a tree-like form, with the distinctive "S" still appearing on what was her chest.

About the "Swanderson" Art Team

Curt Swan was the definitive Superman artist for much of the Silver Age and the Bronze Age. Considered by many to be "the Norman Rockwell of comics", Swan brought a humanity to the Man of Steel that no one before or since has captured. The most beloved period of Swan's long tenure on Superman among many fans was when he was teamed with inker Murphy Anderson in the early 1970s, a perfect melding of styles that came to be known as "Swanderson". Anderson, an accomplished penciler in his own right, was able to make Swan's pencils come to life in a way that perfectly suited an exciting new era for Superman.
