DescriptionI saw this piece on line and looked at it a bunch of times. Then I ran into it at HeroesCon and it stopped me DEAD in my tracks. This was from a portfolio that Bernie did for SDCC in 2003. It’s such a cool and gorgeous piece! I freaking love it! It’s also interesting as it’s a finished pencil illustration that he published as is for the portfolio. And personally, I think it’s the best of the plates from Gardens of the Dead.I just love Bernie's pencil work. I love how he's able to get a sense of the lantern throwing light and shadow in the basement and how that set's the mood of the drawing, and how it plays with the woman's intense fear. Horror magic! This piece to me has a lot of Bernie at his best. And his best was the best. Interesting trivia-fact about the Gardens of the Dead. Joseph Monks, the artist Bernie did the portfolio with, would later go blind from diabetes, and became the first blind person to be hired as a movie director for a studio-budgeted film. The movie kind of flopped, but it was an interesting experiment. Social/Sharing |

Stunning Wrightson piece! I love Wrightson's use of light and shadow in this piece--It creates a moody and mysterious vibe. Fantastic pick-up!

Thanks Bill! Yeah it really is a stunning piece of art! I've got two pieces in front of it, but then it's going up in a frame and on the wall in my home office. The depth of the light and shadows of this made me stop dead in my tracks when I came across it at heroescon last year. Just a brilliant drawing by Bernie!
