DescriptionMark's an artist I've followed for a while now. I've tried to get a sketch from him a few times in the past, but with no luck. I had kind of written off the possibility as Mark's popularity skyrocketed and he got harder and harder to get, coupled with the fact that he puts so much time into each one that he doesn't get to do many per show.In prepping for this year's NYCC, I didn't have a ton of wants, and one big want I was able to take care of even before the show started (see my pt. 1 post), so I planned to just kind of cruise artist's alley and see what I could get. I did note that Mark Brooks posted on FB that he would be taking a list so my friend Dan and I made a game day decision to hit his line first thing on Thursday morning. We were about 15th or so in line and figured I didn't have the greatest odds. Mark was offering headshots, busts and full color torsos. I figured I may as well go big and get the torso, seeing as how I think there were only two or three other torso requests on the list at the time and it was lucky for me to even make the list. Black Cat is one of my usual requests and I know Mark has drawn her quite a bit, so figured that might increase my odds (also somehow no one had requested her on the list yet). Lisa was taking the list as usual and I let her know I would only be there Thursday, but my friend Dan would be there Saturday and could pick up then, which she was cool to note next to my request along with my phone number so she could let me know if Mark was going to do my sketch. At the end of the day, Thursday, we checked in and chatted up Mark who said to check in the next few days. At that point, I wasn't going to get my hopes up... Cut to Friday, I'm sitting at work and get a text from an unknown number. It's Lisa, letting me know Mark started my sketch and it should be ready Saturday. Let's just say that made my day. To cut to the chase, my friend Dan was able to make the pickup on Saturday (thanks Dan) and I'm floored by what I got. I think it's pretty unique even among's Mark's overall body of work. I can't remember many or any times Mark used watercolor to complement his markers. I've been calling it a sketch, but it doesn't really do it justice. Thanks to Mark and Lisa (and Dan)! Gorgeous! The illustration and color work is just killer. Big surprise, huh?! And sincere congrats on being able to get it in the first place - you never know. But sometimes, persistence with a little luck, pays! Congrats!
