This was a thing I commissioned on Halloween as a treat to myself, and serves as further proof of my need to combine my interests whatever they may be.

During October the past few years I've made a habit of checking out "Stirring the Plot," a cozy mystery written by Darryl Gerber Wood set during the Halloween season. This year I finally purchased a copy instead of borrowing it from the library. The murder victim, Pearl Thornton, is a psychiatrist whose late husband discovered a new mineral that got named after him, "Thorntonite." It's described as silvery gray and contains amounts of the element selenium.

I got the idea of commissioning a Steven Universe Gemsona based on thorntonite, using Pearl's appearance as inspiration. The gem is located in the same position where she was given the lethal injection that killed her. Thorntonite's outfit is based on the dress Pearl wears for a ceremony hosted by her charity organization, the Winsome Witches. They're a group that promotes literacy and hold fundraisers during the lead-up to Halloween. Pearl was the founder.

I'm thinking of sending this to Darryl to see what she might think.
