DescriptionThis gorgeous Hawkman splash by Joe Kubert splash was part of the comic art exhibition that toured the country -- It was mean for Flash Comics #97 (DC Comics 1948) but was never published. No idea why as I've seen at least one other interior page. Any idea why this amazing story was not published? One of the tour stops was the Superhero Exhibit at the William Bremen Jewish Heritage Museum in Atlanta, GA - 2011-05-08 Social/Sharing |

It's excellent. Kubert was, what, like 21 when he did this? Just great.

Excellent splash page! D.C. Had a lot of surplus stories when they shut down Flash & All Flash. I've noticed many of the stories that are numbered actually do not match with the published number. I've even seen an All Flash issue that was marked as a story to be published in Flash Comics. Kind of willie-nilly numbering at times.

Fabulous splash page. Don't know where you keep finding all these, but they're real gems!

I just got a page from this story (have found 3 so far including yours) I nresarching it I have discovered taht the Fl numbers do not seem to cprrespond to the issue! Either issue 97 or 98 have FL numbers i nthe 100+ range. Flash 91 has an Oskner story that is Fl 95- My guess ( and we will never know for sure) is that this story was targeted for 91 and bumped for some reason as all the remaining issues are by Kubert. Why it was never published is anyone's guess as from what I have seen of it, it is a really good story. Kubert's early run on Hawkman needs to be reprinted.

You must have bought the page from Romitaman. I know where one other is. Joe was very proud of the splash that I own (and probably the whole story) but the splash he personally exhibited at several museum restrospectives. I think one or two of the stickers from museums is on the back of the piece. It is a fabulous story and I wonder if we could find all the pages and get it published.

Might be feasibkle as part of an artists edition if we could find them- I had the choice of two pages from different dealers but frankly since DC doesn't want to do more archives I wish they would just license the less profitable titles to small presses to reprint. Kubert Golden Age Hawkman, Sugar And Spice are two titles I would buy more archvies of (Gawandaland has repritned all of Plastic Man so the missing issues there are not a big an issue and I frankly prefer their editiosn to the DC archives)

Joe was channeling a few of his fellow creators of the era. All the figures in the top panel just scream Will Eisner, while the draftsmanship in the bottom panel is worthy of Wally Wood. This is one of the best Joe Kubert pages I've ever seen.
