Description

Severino Baraldi, Le pantofole, fine anno ‘70. Tempera su cartoncino, cm 20x29.

Severino Baraldi was born in Sermide on the 10th of December in 1930 and is an Italian illustrator.
As a very talented young boy, he starts drawing as a child at his father’s barbershop realizing little drawings made with chalks for the clients.
In 1955 he moves to Milano where he gets hired in an advertising studio. At the time he signs up for the night classes at the Scuola d'Arte del Castello where he deepens the studies and the naked and anatomy techniques.
In 1956 he was entrusted the task to illustrate the Bible for the “Messaggero di Sant'Antonio Editrice” settled in Padova.
At the beginning of the 1960s Baraldi starts an intense production of narrative for kids. He also starts a seven years deal collaboration with the prestigious English magazine of historical disclosure “Look & Learn”.In the 1970s, the “Fratelli Fabbri” entrusts him with the task of illustrating the historical chapters of the encyclopedia “Scoprire”.
At the end of the 1970s he starts collaborations, still ongoing, with the “San Paolo Edizioni”, to be specific with the weekly “Famiglia Cristiana” for whom he illustrates “I Fatti del Giorno”. For the “Il Giornalino” he draws informative cartoons for the "Conoscere Insieme" series. He also collaborates with Piero Angela illustrating the disappearance of the Persian army in the Egyptian desert for the television show “Quark”.
In 1994 the “Fratelli Fabbri” entrusts him the illustrations of the Bible written down by Gianfranco Ravasi, a work that takes two years to be ended.
In 1981 he’s awarded in Tokyo with the Shogakukan awards because of the seven biographies, among these ones let’s quote the ones of Marco Polo, Galileo Galilei, and Cristoforo Colombo.
In 2002 he starts a collaboration with the “Edizioni d'Arte Lo Scarabeo” settled in Torino. He realizes various bunches of Tarocchi and educational playing-cards.
In May 2007 Baraldi receives in Reggio Emilia the ANAFI award as a recognition of a great artistic career. The same year the artist is received by Papa Benedetto XVI and to whom hands over his illustration inspired by one episode of the Vangeli.
In 2017 he publishes the “Tarocchi Profetici Della Bibbia”, 78 large-sized illustrations realized in the span of 4 years over an iconographic project of the writer Giordano Berti.
Severino Baraldi, because of the quality and the number of pieces painted during his ultra-long career, is collocated by the critics on the top of the Italian illustration along with Achille Beltrame and Walter Molino that are his first artistic sources of inspiration.
It’s estimated that he illustrated more than two hundred twenty books overall.
