DescriptionImage Comics. January, 2007.Having escaped Woodbury with the help of Martinez, the group returns to the prison to find it completely overrun with the dead... This is one of the last all-Adlard, large art splashes he drew for the series. He was firing on all cylinders here and the detail is just incredible- from the character expressions, the gun in the foreground and the trees in the background, the detail on the headlights of the car, the energy of the clouds all tied together with the tilted perspective. Not to mention you've got Rick, Michonne and Glenn! A cover-quality splash, in my opinion, filled with story and emotion. I still can't believe how this piece fell in my lap: I was on ebay and another early splash was listed, and I was going back and forth about if it was worth it to pick up. I liked it- but I didn't love it. So I neurotically went to my desktop folder of published TWD art and began going through all the early large-art Adlard splashes from issues 7-35 to compare it to. When I got to this one I remember stopping and thinking wow, now that's a sweet splash! Not even kidding within a minute I went back to ebay to look at the other splash and the seller had just listed this one too. In absolute disbelief, I minimized Firefox and the scan of this page that I had was still sitting opened on my desktop. If that's not fate I don't know what is. Big thank you to Stan for the deal on what's become one of my favorite pieces. Social/Sharing |

Thanks Keith, but it's a splash! But I wouldn't argue against the fact that some of these early period large-art splashes rival Adlard's covers in terms of quality. :)

I'm not huge into the series, though I generally enjoy seeing the art from it (especially the better pieces like yours), and, maybe it's just the way he inked Rick's face here, but I never noticed how much Adlard's art reminded me of 70s era Herb Trimpe when he was inking himself.

I was thinking about the perspective of this page today at work. Just fantastic.
