Description

Which is what is on the back- suggesting maybe a book illustration from sometime between 1920 and 1945 though it could be from a newspaper serialization.

I pick up a lot of Mystery art partially because I like it and partially for use in my History of Mystery exhibit but to use it there I need to know what story and author it is from . As such any help with IDing the book , magazien issue etc where it appeared would be most appreciated.

It's a gorgeous pencil illustration, George. No idea about its publication, but my gut tells me it might be from much later than the pulps era, if for no other reason that the art seems to be at too high a quality level to be from those days. Either way, it's a beauty.

I expect if a magazine it is not a pulp illsutration but one for a slcik magazine - he worked for various slick sportsman magazines doing cover paintings. The dimensions suggest most likely a book illustration which depending on the writer paid quite well but he aslo did newspaper work and this maybe for a stroy in a sunday magazine or rotagravure section as you are correct the tonal quality is too good for pulp paper.
