Description

Years ago, John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake ran a Kickstarter for a book called Kros: Hallowed Ground.

The Kickstarter description reads:

Set against the backdrop of the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War, KROS: HALLOWED GROUND is a tale of horror that follows the story of Vampire hunter, Major Kros, who fights two wars. During the day, Kros fights the battle history remembers. At night, he fights a secret battle against supernatural forces.

Kros himself is an enigmatic character. He�s a dampyr � a vampire hunter � and has some of the vampire�s abilities. Long lived, Kros cares nothing for the politics of ordinary mortals. The Civil War means nothing to him. Kros is on the trail of the undead. There are considerable dangers to Kros as well--and death is not the worst of them. Blood calls to Blood and there is always the danger that could be turned and become that which he hates.

Around Kros are ordinary people, civilians and soldiers from both the North and South in the midst of a cauldron called Gettysburg. They have faced the conflict and horror of the battlefield and now must face an even greater horror. Vampires have followed the armies and come at night to feast on the fallen. A second battle is fought at Gettysburg of which the history books know nothing. That�s the tale we want to tell. We�ve waited a long time to tell it. With your help, it will happen.

I liked the description so I decided to back it. One of the perks was a drawing of the backer or person of the backer's choice drawn as a vampire. Since Kathy likes the bad girls, I thought it would be a natural.

When Tom asked for photo reference (see Additional Images), I promptly provided it. He wrote back that he wished everyone was so thurough and prompt. I was pleased. The project closed 2015-07-29.

Then delays - the normal stuff, but updates were provided by Tom's wife, Jan Duursema, every so often. Shipments started in 2018-09.

Then radio silence. I saw on the KS page that books were shipping so I waited.

Finally (2020-10), I started trying to contact Tom and Jan and John and ...

My emails were lost. :(

Eventually, John spoke to Jan. Jan wrote to me. Tom remembered the drawing and he thought it had been sent, but there was no record of it being shipped. This was a year or two after the last package had left their place so now I'm worried. :)

Eventually, they found it in a stack of drawings in Tom's office. Hope!

Jan started gathering the pieces of the deliverable and there were a few delays there, too, but eventually, she arrived!

I think he did a great job. I gave it to her for her birthday.

Beautiful piece, Alex. Tom captured Kathy perfectly, with that sweet smile. And then the fangs come out to show her bad side. Congrat to you and the lovely Kathy. Well worth the wait!
