“The Spirit & Ebony White” pencil & India ink specialty illustration by Will Eisner (Circa 1942)

(Circa 1942) (The Register & Tribune Syndicate) Based on Will Eisner’s inscription, this large, unpublished Spirit drawing was done for a sergeant he most likely knew either at Fort Dix or at the Pentagon while he was a warrant officer during World War 2. From Ebony’s comment, it was certainly intended to be hung in a workplace; at least in part as a morale booster. When one looks at the warmth projected by the smiling faces of The Spirit and Ebony, it is hard to imagine it not achieving its intended goal. (William Erwin Eisner: 3/6/1917 to 1/3/2005)
