Sexy Blonde Beauty Painting by Sean Phillips

Over the last year, crime noir master & artist extraordinaire Sean Phillips has sporadically opened up his 1000 GBP (or $1300) commission list. I thought: why not try & get something that’s a bit more accustomed to my budget? Sean was the nicest and he kindly worked with my proposal – I think I also lucked out, sending him an email before too many of the bigger pieces got ordered.

Owning a full-blown commission by him has always been high on my wish list. Considering his film noir influences, I instantly knew I wanted a classic beauty blonde. A character that could have walked straight out of “Criminal” or “The Fade Out”.

The perspective, the playful pose and the elegant black dress: this is exactly what I wanted. Sexy, but classy. While I adore Sean’s black and white work, I knew there needed to be a splash of color in this. Sean’s paintings are too great not to ask – so I suggested a splash of color for the blonde hair. As with the rest of this beauty, Sean overdid it. Can’t complain! Overdoing can be taken quite literally, too, since the piece is 11x17.

I normally don’t upload the extra pictures I get from artists, but this one is just too good not to show – see underneath. Composition and (high)lighting wise, it’s perfect.

I have already expressed my love for Sean Phillips in my ‘Miss Misery’ post, a piece I still appreciate a lot. But I gladly reiterate: Sean is one of my favorite artists and I have most of his work (in multiple formats) and art books. His cinematic style, thick & moody inking, and great facial work always leave me wanting more when I’m done with his (and Ed Brubaker’s) books.
