Description
Just look at this great splash by the always impeccable Chris Sprouse. In pure precise pencils no less.

This is the first appearance of the Society of Super Heroes as a team, Grant Morrison’s own version of the JSA from Earth 20 from what is probably the last good super hero book he wrote where his usual writing obsessions worked well within the context of his grand arc/serie: The Multiversity.

So here we have the Mighty Atom, Doc Fate, Green Lantern, Immortal Man and Lady Blackwak, leader of the Blackhawks (I had to look all that info up).

Their character design is simple but on spot with how they would dress in that era. Fate’s blend of the Rocketeer and the classic Fate is particularly appropriate and well done. I find that Fate’s helmet has always been a splendid and original design so I’m delighted that Chris (or Grant?) choose to make him the center character for this splash.

As a fan of the James Robinson, David Goyer and later Geoff Johns’ JSA, this story and particular page pushed all the right buttons for me.

Not to mention Chris Sprouse’s perfect figure work. I like how he infused personality and character depth in all of them by how they stand as well as the fact that it’s not your typical team shot composition with the leader in front of a perfect triangle composition, full of confidence.

I already wrote how Sprouse was great at drawing characters walk believably and it’s also true here as they are simply standing.

Just a great piece of art from a great story by a great artist.

As PS note, I will conclude to say that after acquiring the splash from an auction house, I was later contacted by them in order to see if I was interested in selling it. While I understand the monetary motivation, it’s not a behavior I care much about. So if you were the commissioner behind that approach, please respect the fact that this piece is not for sale.

Great Splash! I'm a big fan of the SOS from Multiversity. I think I own this page's sibling : )

Really nice and crisp pencils. I totally agree on the character design, it's nicely set in period. That Dr Fate is awesome. Congrats!

Really well-composed page and brilliant in its simplicity. I agree with you, his postures are indeed very well rendered and personify each character's attitude quite distinctly, not an easy feat. Congrats on a really cool splash that could clearly make for a classic cover.

I love Sprouse's pulp/superhero hybrid designs.
