DescriptionRowland Emett (1906-1990) was a wonderful British cartoonist, illustrator and sculptor, known for his quirky drawings of mechanized objects, especially his terrific trains and vehicles. Emett also turned that vision into eclectic kinetic sculptures, on the order of Alexander Calder's work. Emett's drawings were the inspiration for the vehicles in the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. This terrific cartoon, titled "The Car of Tomorrow", is a nod towards W. Heath Robinson and Rube Goldberg, with their contraption-based cartoons. I'm not sure where this piece appeared in print, but the drawing and ink wash work is simply wonderful. I'm informed that the piece is from 1955. Social/Sharing |
